Hong Kong Observatory warns Typhoon Fung-wong may disrupt regional flights
The Hong Kong Observatory’s 6 November bulletin projects Typhoon Fung-wong will intensify into a super typhoon as it barrels toward the northern Philippines over the coming weekend. While the storm’s core is not expected to make landfall in Hong Kong, the city’s aviation stakeholders have begun contingency planning for peripheral gale-force winds and potential air-traffic-flow restrictions.

Airport Authority Hong Kong has alerted airlines to prepare for slot cancellations or diversions on 9–10 November should the storm veer west of current models. Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines have activated waiver policies, allowing ticket rebooking without fees. Ferry operators on the Hong Kong–Macau and Hong Kong–Shekou routes are also drawing up suspension timetables.

Travel managers should keep assignees transiting through Hong Kong informed of possible overnight delays. Companies with offshore engineering teams in the South China Sea have moved personnel to standby shelters, citing lessons from last year’s Typhoon Saola that caused a 27-hour airport shutdown.

The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal No 1 when the system comes within 800 km of the territory; a more disruptive Signal No 3 could follow by Saturday night if the storm skirts closer than forecast. Business-continuity plans should be reviewed, including stockpiling laptops for remote work and checking hotel availability for stranded travellers.
