Milan’s 7 November 24-hour transit strike threatens business travel

Milan’s 7 November 24-hour transit strike threatens business travel
Milan’s AL Cobas union has confirmed a 24-hour strike by city-owned transport operator ATM for Friday 7 November, with the announcement published on 5 November. Tram, bus and metro lines will stop outside the guaranteed windows of 06:00-08:45, 15:00-18:00, causing knock-on delays for rail and air connections at Milano Centrale and Linate airport.

The walk-out is part of a broader protest against planned liberalisation of local-transport services and the ‘Milano Next’ privatisation project. Drivers also cite safety concerns, staff shortages and wage stagnation. Past ATM stoppages have reduced peak-hour capacity by up to 70 percent, prompting taxi shortages and congestion on the Tangenziale ring roads.

Corporate mobility managers with travellers heading to Milan Fashion District, Rho-Fiera or client meetings on 7 November should arrange hotel shuttles, pre-booked taxis or remote-work alternatives. Trenord regional trains and Italo high-speed services are not directly involved but may face boarding queues as commuters seek alternatives. Flights remain scheduled; however, longer check-in times are expected as airport buses may be affected.

The action highlights Italy’s fragmented labour relations landscape, where local strikes often coincide with peak business-travel days. Contingency planning and traveller-tracking tools are recommended for any company operating in or through Milan this week.
