Ticket Sales Open for New Malmö-Copenhagen–Basel EuroNight, Launching April 2026
Europe’s night-train renaissance gains a Swiss flagship: from 4 November 2025 tickets go on sale for the new EuroNight service linking Malmö, Copenhagen and Basel. Operated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) together with German private operator RDC, the train will run three nights a week (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays) from 16 April 2026, providing a low-carbon alternative to short-haul flights between Scandinavia and Switzerland.

The route is financed partly under Switzerland’s CO₂-law incentive fund, which supports modal shift from air to rail on journeys under 1 000 km. An estimated 140 000 passengers fly annually between Copenhagen and Zürich alone; SBB forecasts that if just 15 % switch to the sleeper, the project will cut 12 000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Rolling stock will include modern couchettes, classic sleepers and seated coaches, all refurbished with noise-dampening and energy-efficient HVAC systems. Passengers leaving Malmö at 18:40 or Copenhagen at 20:05 will arrive in Basel SBB at 07:30, in time for onward Swiss domestic connections coordinated under the Taktfahrplan. Business travellers can book a “Work & Sleep” single compartment that includes Wi-Fi, a fold-down desk and breakfast at the SBB lounge in Basel.

For corporate mobility managers the product offers a viable door-to-door time of 11 hours, competitive with a flight when security queues, city transfers and an overnight hotel are factored in. Early-bird fares start at CHF 59 for a seat and CHF 139 for a couchette; flexible sleeper compartments cost from CHF 229.

SBB will monitor load-factors for 24 months. If the trial succeeds, the Federal Office of Transport (BAV) has signalled possible support to extend the line southwards to Bern and northwards to Stockholm in the 2027 timetable.
