San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has detailed the next phase of its Terminal 3 West Modernisation, a multiyear, $2.6 billion project that will shut the existing AirTrain station and a large portion of the departure curb from 4 November 2025. United Airlines, which operates the bulk of Terminal 3 flights, will relocate west-end ticket counters to Terminal 2 while keeping east-end counters open.
Travellers catching flights from Gates D/E must now check in at Terminal 2, whereas F-gate passengers will still use Terminal 3. The AirTrain station serving Terminal 3 closes until 2027; the Terminal 2 stop is being renamed “Terminals 2 & 3.” Rideshare drop-offs are encouraged at Terminal 2 or the Terminal 3 arrivals level.
The renovation encompasses seismic retrofits, an expanded security checkpoint, a sterile connector to the International Terminal’s Customs Hall, and a six-story building housing lounges and office space. When complete, the western half of Terminal 3 will add 200,000 sq ft of concessions and LEED-Platinum-targeted sustainability features.
Business-travel impact: expect longer curb-to-gate times, reassess pick-up/drop-off instructions for transferees, and update corporate travel guidance for United flyers using SFO. Companies with frequent Bay-Area travel should consider booking extra connection buffers through 2027.
