Biometric EU Border Checks for Cars at Dover Postponed, Giving Czech Road Travellers Extra Time
Czech tourists and business travellers planning to drive through the Port of Dover to the United Kingdom will not face biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) checks just yet. Dover’s operator confirmed on November 1 that the start of EES processing for private cars has been delayed pending final sign-off from French border authorities.

Freight trucks and coaches have been subject to EES since October 12, but the extension to tourist traffic—previously expected to begin on November 1—has been put on hold. Under EES, non-EU travellers, including Czechs, must register fingerprints and a facial image the first time they cross an external Schengen border. Port CEO Doug Bannister said Dover’s £40 million infrastructure is ready and does not anticipate peak-season gridlock once the system goes live, but full implementation now depends on Franco-British coordination.

For Czech mobility programmes, the postponement means smoother self-drive trips to the UK during the autumn and Christmas periods, yet companies should brief travellers that the new rules could be activated at short notice. Once operational, processing a single car is expected to take up to six minutes—roughly six times longer than current passport checks—raising the potential for queues.

Travel managers should monitor Dover’s announcements, allow extra buffer time for channel crossings later in the year and remind staff that air and rail passengers will still undergo French-managed EES checks at juxtaposed controls in Calais and Folkestone.
