Digital Aadhaar Update Goes Live—Big Win for UAE-Based Indian Expats

Digital Aadhaar Update Goes Live—Big Win for UAE-Based Indian Expats
Indian nationals living in the UAE can now update their Aadhaar identity records entirely online, thanks to a system overhaul effective November 1, 2025. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has enabled remote changes to name, address, date of birth and mobile number, removing the need to visit enrolment centres in India.

For the UAE’s estimated 3.5 million Indian residents—the largest expatriate community—this means faster bank-account maintenance, smoother property transactions and easier compliance with India’s mandatory Aadhaar-PAN link. The online portal authenticates users via one-time passcodes sent to their registered mobile numbers and cross-checks new data against government databases, slashing processing times from weeks to hours.

Financial advisers say the change will accelerate digital KYC for non-resident Indians, allowing faster onboarding for investment accounts and credit cards. It also aids global mobility: expats rotating between India and the UAE can update local addresses without disrupting residency or tax status.

The update is free until June 14, 2026, after which a nominal ₹75 fee applies. UIDAI has also expanded accepted proof-of-address documents to include utility bills, further easing the process.

Industry experts urge NRIs to act quickly, given the December 31, 2025 deadline to link Aadhaar and PAN or face deactivation of tax numbers—an issue that could hinder property sales or dividend receipts.
