Red wind warning for north-west Poland as Storm Lothar disrupts transport
The German Meteorological Service (DWD) expanded orange wind alerts to a red offshore warning for north-west Poland late on 30 October as Storm Lothar barrelled across the Baltic Sea. Gusts exceeding 110 km/h are forecast for the Pomeranian coast, prompting the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) to activate level-three storm protocols at the ports of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Świnoujście.

Gdańsk-Lech Wałęsa Airport has advised passengers to check flight status frequently; airport operations teams are preparing for runway inspections and potential de-icing even though the winter season has only just begun. PKP PLK, the rail-infrastructure manager, imposed 40 km/h speed limits on exposed coastal sections of the E65 trunk line, adding up to 30 minutes to Warsaw–Gdynia InterCity journeys. Ferry operator Unity Line cancelled its overnight Świnoujście–Ystad sailings, re-booking freight customers on later departures.

For mobile employees, the timing is awkward: Poland’s long All-Saints’ weekend traditionally generates one of the year’s largest domestic-travel surges. HR and mobility teams should warn travellers to build extra margin into itineraries, especially those transiting the Tri-City region. Insurance brokers note that many corporate travel-policies classify weather-related delays as ‘extraordinary circumstances’, limiting automatic compensation.

Meteorologists expect Lothar’s centre to move into Lithuania by the morning of 31 October, but strong westerlies may continue to impact northern Poland through the holiday period. Businesses with field staff should review duty-of-care procedures and maintain real-time communication until warnings are lifted.
