Yellow Weather Alert Issued for Costa del Sol Threatens Flight Schedules and Road Transfers

Yellow Weather Alert Issued for Costa del Sol Threatens Flight Schedules and Road Transfers
Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET placed Málaga province under a yellow alert on 28 October, forecasting up to 60 mm of rain within 12 hours and winds exceeding 50 km/h. The warning, active from 06:00 to 18:00 on 29 October, covers the Costa del Sol tourism corridor, the Guadalhorce Valley and Ronda.

Airlines operating at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport have begun waiving change fees for 29–30 October flights. Ground-handling company Swissport confirmed it will roster additional staff for potential baggage-belt delays, while taxi and transfer firms have warned of extended journey times on the AP-7 coastal motorway, prone to flash flooding.

For relocation managers, the timing is delicate: end-of-month lease-signing trips coinciding with UK half-term holidays mean high volumes of inbound assignees. Housing agents in Marbella advise rescheduling viewings to avoid hillside areas susceptible to landslides.

Corporate travel departments should activate weather-monitoring protocols and remind travellers that Spanish rail operator Renfe often imposes speed restrictions on the Málaga–Madrid AVE line during heavy rain, adding up to 30 minutes to the trip.

While AEMET classifies the alert as ‘moderate’, similar autumn storms in 2023 caused 48 flight cancellations and €4 million in insurance claims. Hotels with rooftop solar arrays have been instructed to secure panels, and Málaga Airport’s crisis centre will decide at 05:00 whether to shift operations to single-runway mode.
