Italian Ministers Embark on West-Africa Mission to Curb Irregular Migration and Boost Trade
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi will travel to Mauritania, Senegal and Niger from 28 October as part of Rome’s expanded ‘Mattei Plan for Africa’, the Farnesina announced on 27 October. The mission aims to deepen security and economic partnerships that help tackle the root causes of irregular migration toward Italy while opening markets for Italian companies.

In Nouakchott the ministers will inaugurate Italy’s new embassy and discuss joint border-management projects with Mauritanian counterparts. In Dakar they will co-host the first Italy–Senegal Business Forum, where Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and SIMEST are expected to sign a memorandum on renewables, agro-industry and digital infrastructure. Senegal is already Italy’s fourth-largest Sub-Saharan export market; bilateral trade in the first seven months of 2025 has surpassed full-year 2024 levels.

The final stop in Niamey includes talks with Niger’s transitional president and a visit to MISIN, the Italian support mission that trains local forces in counter-terrorism and anti-smuggling operations. Officials say renewed dialogue with Niger is essential to restart cooperation on migrant-transit controls along the Sahel route.

For mobility and global-workforce planners, the trip signals that Italy will continue to link legal-migration channels—such as the new Flussi quotas—with intensified efforts to reduce unauthorised crossings. Companies sending staff or contractors to West Africa may benefit from strengthened consular services once Italy’s diplomatic footprint expands.
