Middle-East airspace closures force costly detours for Paris-Asia routes as Gulf hubs shutter
Just as French corporates were ramping up post-Lunar-New-Year travel to Asia, an escalating conflict in the Gulf triggered the most severe regional air-space shutdown since the pandemic. According to aviation-intelligence site Air Traveler Club, Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways halted all Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha traffic between 28 February and 1 March after missiles struck oil infrastructure. Although Emirates and Etihad restored skeleton long-haul schedules by 6–7 March, the disruption persisted into 9 March 2026, the date of the site’s detailed situation report. For French passengers the impact is acute: Etihad’s limited restart list includes a single daily Abu Dhabi–Paris CDG rotation capped at 70 % capacity, while Emirates cut two of three daily A380 Dubai–Paris services. Air France and KLM continue to overfly Saudi Arabia and India to skirt Iranian and Iraqi skies, adding 90–120 minutes to Paris–Singapore and Paris–Bangkok block times and forcing crew-rest-driven schedule changes. Corporate-travel managers report spot economy fares on CDG–SIN rising from €820 to over €1,400, while premium-class inventory has tightened sharply. The closures also complicate cargo flows. French exporters of luxury goods and time-sensitive pharmaceuticals routinely hub through Dubai; forwarders now reroute via Istanbul or Doha once capacity returns, paying surcharges of up to 25 %. Under EU 261, passengers arriving in France more than three hours late are entitled to €300–€600 compensation, but airlines argue “extraordinary circumstances.” Litigation is expected. Risk teams in France are urging travellers to shift to North Pacific routings via the USA where possible, or use Singapore as a proxy hub into Southeast Asia. They also remind staff that travel-insurance policies may exclude conflict-zone disruptions unless specific “war risk” riders are in place.

At the documentation stage, firms may also find themselves needing fresh transit visas for newly adopted routings; VisaHQ’s France portal (https://www.visahq.com/france/) can expedite these applications, clarify shifting entry requirements and even arrange emergency passport renewals, giving travel managers a single, reliable touch-point as the situation evolves.

With Qatar’s Hamad International still closed and no timeline for Iranian airspace reopening, analysts predict elevated Paris-Asia pricing through late March at least.
