Murcia Mobilises 216 Civil-Guard Officers for Constitution Weekend Traffic Surge
Spain’s Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT) predicts a record 272,000 vehicle movements across the Region of Murcia during the Constitution-Day long weekend (5-8 December). To keep roads moving, authorities have deployed 216 additional Guardia Civil Tráfico officers, supplemented by drones, helicopters, stretch-speed controls and 90 fixed and mobile cameras along the A-7, A-30 and AP-7 corridors.

The special operation—part of Spain’s nationwide “Operación Constitución-Inmaculada”—started at 13:00 on 5 December and runs until midnight on the 8th. Traffic chief Virginia Jerez said distraction accounted for 45 % of the region’s 32 road deaths so far in 2025 and urged drivers to use rest areas and check tyre pressures before setting off. Variable-message signs now display real-time border-crossing wait-times for travellers heading to Andalusia and Valencia.

Why it matters for mobility managers: holiday congestion often snags business travellers and assignees flying out of Murcia-Corvera and Alicante airports. Companies with cross-border supply chains are bracing for possible delays in just-in-time deliveries, and relocation providers have advised clients to avoid residence-permit or empadronamiento appointments on 9 December, when return traffic could still be heavy.

The deployment also showcases Spain’s growing use of aerial surveillance. The DGT’s drone fleet logged over 270 infringements in the region during last year’s holiday period, leading to 82 on-the-spot suspensions of foreign drivers’ licences. This year, data will feed directly into the EU’s cross-border enforcement network, meaning unpaid fines could follow motorists home.

Police unions welcome the resources but warn that staffing levels remain thin at smaller border posts with Cartagena’s port, where ferry arrivals from Algeria and Morocco surge during the same dates. The Interior Ministry says contingency teams are on standby if maritime passenger volumes exceed forecasts.
